Formats and where they are used
All the formats below implement the European standard EN 16931, in one of its two XML syntaxes: UBL 2.1 or UN/CEFACT CII D16B. That is why one viewer can read them all.
| Format | Syntax | Main countries | Tools |
|---|---|---|---|
| XRechnung | UBL or CII | Germany | Viewer, validator |
| ZUGFeRD 2.x | CII in PDF/A-3 | Germany | Viewer, validator |
| Factur-X | CII in PDF/A-3 | France | Viewer, validator |
| Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 | UBL | Belgium, Netherlands, Nordics and others | Validator |
| Plain UBL / CII (EN 16931) | UBL or CII | France (base formats), cross-border | This page |
What you see
Whatever the format, the layout is the same: seller and buyer, invoice lines, VAT breakdown, totals with an independent recalculation, payment details (IBAN, BIC, terms), the buyer reference or Leitweg-ID, notes and the list of attachments. For hybrid PDFs, the extracted XML appears next to the PDF so you can compare them.
Not supported yet: ZUGFeRD 1.0 and the Polish KSeF FA(3) structure. A KSeF viewer is on the roadmap.

Privacy and limits
The file is read inside your browser. It is never uploaded and there is no server-side processing. The only network requests are for this page and the official rule files, which are the same for every visitor. Nothing is stored; closing the tab discards the data. No account is needed.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know the format before I open the file?
No. The format is detected from the file itself. You can drop any supported XML or PDF here.
Is a PDF attached to an email an e-invoice?
Not in the sense of the German, French or Belgian rules. An e-invoice is structured data. A ZUGFeRD or Factur-X PDF qualifies because of the XML embedded in it.
Can I also validate the file?
Yes. Switch to the validation report, or use one of the dedicated validators listed above.
Which file should I archive?
The original file you received, unchanged. A printout or PDF made from the viewer is only a readable copy.
Is the viewer free?
Yes, with no account and no limit on the number of files.
